Hey there, I hope this blog entry finds all of you well.

It’s been a busy few weeks here at Also Ran. Taking up most of our time and effort has been the running of various community music projects in the Cambridge area of UK- we offered up free studio time to groups of local aspiring artists and helped them to compose and record their own songs, and then perform those songs live at an event. It all ran very well, and I’m pretty sure all of the participants got a lot of value from coming on board- I got a great feeling watching them all perform.

The down-side of that has been our own studio productions have had to take a back-seat, and now that the dust has settled, I’m really looking forward to cracking on with some beats. I have some un-finished tracks that I’m kind of excited by and just need to apply a few finishing touches, which for me is always the hardest part- I remember talking to Joshua from Iz and Diz when I first started out, and the advice he gave me was to know when to let go of the song and put it out ‘you’re never gonna think it’s perfect’.

The good news is that we’re putting out an EP from Martin Dawson (who was recently in the UK playing at one of the legendary Kitchen parties). It’s 3 bumping house tracks, all kind of deep and all beautiful in their own way. I’m gonna be remixing Dub Freedom from the release later in the year- I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the parts . We’ll upload the EP on the site in the next few days.

Finally, my ‘Least Effort’ EP was released for download last week. I’ve been very happy with the response, the track has been featured on lots of radio shows and podcasts, and has been lurking around the Juno top 40 sales chart since we put it out. You can check it out HERE.

We hope life’s treating you all well. Over the last month we at Also Ran have been reaching out into the community and organising some music production courses for budding artists. It’s proving to be a lot of fun and we’ve been met with some amazing enthusiasm, energy and talent. We’ve helped some groups in Cambridge (UK) to compose and record their own beats, and right now we’re helping them fine tune a performance with help from our brothers at Half-Ton Studios.

Label founder Patrizio Cavaliere uploaded a mixtape of deep house and disco rhythms a couple of weeks back, with some amazing numbers from Tensnake, Idjut Boys, Spencer Parker and Karizma. You can download the mix FREE on the artist profiles page.

Friday 5th March sees the release of the next EP from Also Ran, Patrizio’s ‘Least Effort’, including a beach party bump from Confetti Bomb. Both mixes have been attracting support from some of our favorite artist, including Mr V, Danny Tenaglia, Ashley Beedle, Brother’s Vibe and more. Head to our music page for a listen.

Next up on the release front will be the ‘Freedom EP’ from Martin Dawson- 3 heavy house beats from the man behind King Roc and Two Armadillos. Patrizio’s working on a remix too, but he hasn’t let us hear it yet!

That’s about all for now, no gigs to report just now as we’ve been kind of busy running these courses, but we’ll have some news on that front in the Spring time (which we all hope is coming soon as this cold and snow is getting LONG).

Burning Down the House flyer by Ram

Apart from sulking about how cold it is in England, we at Also Ran have been busy fixing up our new website, with help from Albi Design, and are happy with the new look.

We’ve promo’d the forthcoming release, ‘Least Effort’, and are pleased to report that the EP has generated support from big boys like Danny Tenaglia, Ashley Beedle, Layo, Terry Francis and Norman Nodge among others.

In the pipeline we have an EP on the way from Martin Dawson- the man behind King Roc and Two Armadillos (with Giles Smith). We got the masters last week and the tracks sound amazing, we’ll have them up on the site next month.

We noticed a recent campaign aimed at saving our beloved Technics 1210’s from extinction. It took our man Patrizio the last 5 years to accept the decline of vinyl and the emergence of the download, and we reckon it’s no coincidence that a lot of heads stopped caring about house music around the same time DJ’s started turning up to gigs with laptops. You can’t deny progress, it’s true, but Paddy will still rock the wax whenever possible (basically when flights are not involved).

Last thing, Patrizio has been working on some tracks with his new hardware set-up, with pleasing results. The tones, textures and the ‘hands on’ musicality of his Moog are definitely inspiring creativity and energy. You’ll hear the results in the Spring, hopefully you’ll dig.

Coming later this year we have an original EP from Jericho Dub (also known as King Roc and one half of Two Armadillos), as well as the tracks we’re cooking up right now. I’ll also be putting out a DJ mix available for free download in the next week or two, so watch this space.
